IVP4406: Methods & Materials (1)

This course is designed to amalgamate studio and artistic practices of student teachers with pedagogical approaches. In this course, participants will learn to translate studio techniques and material usage to suit the primary teaching setting and will design lesson packages that are developmentally and pedagogically appropriate. participants will learn about theories surrounding concept-based pedagogy and design lessons that incorporate multiple visual forms (i.e. 2D, 3D, New media). In addition, participants will also have the opportunity to sample best practices in the field as well as pilot their own lessons design and pedagogical approaches. 

Lesson conducted by local artist David Chan on every Thursday at 1230pm - 330pm in NIE-3-B2-01

Lesson 1 - 15 August 2013

was very happy to find out that we would be making recycled paper  .... though making recycled paper has been in our P5 SOW for the last 2 years, the tips picked up in this lesson is gonna improved it by leaps and bounds.... =D

and my favourite tip for the day is - 
use toilet paper instead of shredded paper to make the paper pulp just so that the excess can be flush into the toilet bowl!!!! wahahahaha

this is like a saviour tip la.... we had so much problem with the disposal issue and had clogged up the sink in the art room at least 4 times in the last 2 years.... =P

*never use glossy paper or newspaper due to the presence of ammonia and oil... but i guess we can always like the kiddos explore the different kind of materials so decide on which is the best paper to make recycled paper. 


step 1: 
add 2 part water (warm water preferred so that the fiber of the paper can be broken down faster) to 1 part toilet paper, blend and leave it for at least 2 hours

*a scoop of white glue can be added to the mixture to reduce bleeding of paint/ink through the dried paper

toilet paper pulp... kind of gross actually...=P 

with coloured dye

step 2: 
prepare a pail/tub of water  that is big enough for the sieve and ur hands

step 3: 
place the sieve in the tray + pour some paper pulp into the tray and ensure an even distribution of paper pulp before lifting up the  sieve
let the excess water dripped back into the tub

step 4: 
press a piece of canvas over the paper pulp to remove excess water

step 5: 
placed the sieve on a table cloth and press on the canvas with another cloth to remove as much water as possible 

an empty bottle can help to make the task easier... =)  

Step 6: 
remove the paper and canvas from the sieve carefully

place another canvas over the paper pressed them together before removing the paper from both canvas for drying on the rack


my first attempt - Failed miserably... ='(

2nd attempt - not too bad

3rd attempt - got lobang.... =( 

anyway, David said that my recycled paper might become 'crispy biscuits' when they dried cos i had left out a very crucial step - step 7..... i didnt use the second canvas to hold the fiber of the paper together.... and did i mentioned that i was a super big mouth who went around telling my course-mates that there's no need for the second canvas.... and they believed me.....

i truly believed that the second canvas was not needed at the time when i told ur oh.... 

this grave mistake highlights that :

(1) i need to stay focus and pay more attention in class
(2) i should keep my big mouth shut
(3) when giving instruction, it is very important to let the pupils know the importance of each and every step and the possible consequences if the steps are not adhered to during the demonstration but on the other hand, allowing them to continue with their mistakes and point it out when the consequences occur might help them to remember it better too oh

updates from lesson 2:

the papers turned out fine.... =).... just a little curly wurly at the edges

after thoughts:
