lesson 3 - 29 August 2013
(making tempera paint)
Step 1: crush soft pastel into powder
using an empty bailey bottle ... and it can only be bailey bottle....any other bottle dun grind as well... wahahaha... just joking la.. =P
Step 2: Prepare the binder & fixer
add water to a small amount of white glue (fixer)
this will prevent the artwork from turning moulding or attracting insects eventhough egg yolk will be added to the medium in later steps..

then add egg yolk (no egg white) to the above mixture in the ratio of 1:1
Step 3: mix mixture above with the crushed pastel
the reason why egg yolk is preferred is that egg white will give a less consistent mixture shown below.
the higher fat content in egg yolk also gives the final artwork a glossy effect hence, quail egg yolks will be an even better option
sample art work
somehow i feel that the slightly curved purplish brown strokes 'created' a dent in the bottle...agree????
the power of the direction of stroke seh!!!
anyway our subject of the lesson -
ours was the only group that has a subject that's so complicated.... the rest had plain bottles....
teacher's demo:
anyhow anyhow and a proportionate sketch of a bottle appeared.

1st attempt
2nd attempt
most of our paintings were so horrid that david decided to give us homework...
though i remember clearly the steps in creating the tempera paint and had fun grinding and mixing them at home
i totally lost the key point in tempera painting.... =s
my power was so great that i transformed a transparent whisky bottle
into an opaque bottle with my "magic" paintbrush.... =P
worse, i even tried painting an apple without realising that this technique is meant for painting transparent objects so that the shine and highlights can be seen.
