IVP4402 - Three Dimensional Exploration (3)

lesson 3 - 27 August 2013

Part 2 of face casting

step 1 - spread vaseline over the whole inner surface of the plaster bandage moulded previously

use brushes for hard to reach areas but make sure that the strokes are smoothen with fingers to avoid rough surfaces on the plaster

NOTE:
use oil instead of vaseline for hard to reach places or for vessel like plaster mould (whole hand)
remove the oil within 5-10 mins

step 2: use clay to clog up the nose from the outside so that the plaster would not leak out when poured in

step 3: balance the mould with more chunks of clay

Step 4: pour the powder plaster into water till 'australia island' can be seen ....ratio of approx 1:1.... note to pour in the powder through the fingers (act as a sieve) into the pail to remove any clumps.... using hand to mix the powder and the crush any clumps in the water
too much plaster will cause the mixture to harden before pouring or before all the air bubbles are removed by tapping in the next step. too little plaster will result in a weak and brittle sculpture

step 5:  pour the mixture into the mould

and any excess into plastic containers to create carving blocks for future use

wash the pail IMMEDIATELY as it would be difficult to remove the remaining plaster if left to dry.

Step 6: tap around the mould continuously to remove any air bubbles until the mixture hardens ... leave for about 10 - 15 minutes before ripping the plaster bandage to remove the hardened plaster

Tutor made such a beautiful cast of zuby's face.... likey....
